Japan quake won't affect UAE or region

The National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology, UAE, said that the massive earthquake that hit Japan will not have any implications on the UAE and the rest of the region because of the region's remoteness from the centre of seismic activity.

The UAE centre had registered the earthquake, which hit the Japanese shore.

The magnitude 8.9 offshore quake unleashed a 23-foot tsunami and was followed by more than 50 aftershocks for hours, many of them of more than magnitude 6.0. It hit the Japan shores at 9:46am UAE time.

Dozens of cities and villages along a 2,100-kilometer stretch of coastline were shaken by violent tremors that reached as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of kilometres from the epicentre.
