Tokyo - Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, yesterday began a Middle East tour, which would take him to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Egypt and Kuwait. The Japanese premier, whose tour of the region will last until May 3, is being accompanied by a high-level economic delegation, made up of more than 170 top economic and financial personalities, representing reputable business interests in Japan.

A top Japanese official told WAM that the visit of the Japanese premier to the UAE would be the first in 29 years by a Japanese Prime Minister. He said Japan sees in the rapid development of Abu Dhabi and Dubai a good example of modernisation of society and re-affirmed the significance of Saudi Arabia and the UAE in Japan's energy security as the two countries provide Japan with more than half of its oil requirement.

He said Prime Minister Abe will begin his tour of the region with Saudi Arabia, before flying to the UAE, where he will visit Abu Dhabi and Dubai to acquaint himself with the progress of work on the huge construction development in the country. He will then fly out to Qatar and follow it up with a visit to Egypt and Kuwait where he will visit the air base where the Japanese forces are based to provide logistics support for its allied US forces in Iraq.
