Jersey First Minister to visit UAE

A top-level delegation from Jersey, the largest of the British Channel Islands, is to visit the UAE in late October, for the first overseas visit of its kind ever undertaken by the Jersey Government. The delegation will be headed by Senator Pierre Horsfall, who, as President of the Policy and Resources Committee of Jersey's Parliament, is effectively the island's First Minister. It will also include Senator Frank Walker, President of the Parliament's Finance and Economics Committee (Minister of Finance), and Richard Pratt, head of the island's Financial Services Commission, as well as senior officials of Jersey Finance, the promotional arm of the island's finance industry.

"I am delighted to be leading Jersey's first overseas delegation to the United Arab Emirates," Senator Horsfall said today. "The UAE already has close links with Jersey through our finance industry, and I am looking forward to the opportunity of discussing a wide range of economic and financial issues with the UAE officials and organisations that we will be meeting during our visit." "On previous private visits to the UAE, I have been impressed by the modern development of the country and, in particular, by the way in which issues related to the environment are given priority by Government," Horsfall added.

"This is an approach we share in Jersey, and I am delighted that a number of Jersey residents have played an active part in the conservation of the UAE's environment and heritage." A self-governing dependency of the British Crown, Jersey is represented by the Government of the United Kingdom in matters relating to foreign affairs and defence, but is autonomous in other matters, with its own Parliament and fiscal and legal systems. A major international finance centre, the island has over US $200 billion of funds under management, a substantial amount of which comes from the Arabian Gulf states, including the UAE. "One of the main purposes of our visit," Horsfall said, "is to explain to the UAE's financial community the wide range of services available in Jersey, to ensure that the relationship that already exists continues to grow." The seven-day visit, starting 25th October, will include visits to Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Fujairah. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
