A top-ranking delegation from the British Channel Island of Jersey arrived in Abu Dhabi yesterday at the beginning of a weeklong visit to the United Arab Emirates. The delegation is led by Jersey's top politician, Senator Frank Walker, whose post as President of the Policy and Resources Committee of the States of Jersey, the island's Parliament, is equivalent to that of First Minister.

"I am delighted to be back in Abu Dhabi again, leading the third official Jersey delegation to visit the Emirates," Walker told the Emirates News Agency, WAM. "We have already had two very successful earlier visits, in 2002 and 2003, and there are close links between Jersey and the UAE in a variety of fields, in particular in the finance industry. I am looking forward to discussing how these ties can be further strengthened." The delegation also includes Deputy Gerald Voisin, the President of Jersey's Economic Development Committee, and senior officials of Jersey Finance, the body which represents the island's finance industry.

The official delegation is accompanied by a 40-strong commercial delegation, including representatives of banks, trust companies and legal firms. During their visit to Abu Dhabi, the Jersey team is scheduled to meet with Government officials and leading members of Abu Dhabi's financial and banking community. They will also visit Dubai during the week. Jersey is a self-governing dependency of the British Crown, and has had its own autonomous government since 1204. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
