Jersey delegation to visit Gulf this week

A major delegation from the British Channel Island of Jersey begins a ten-day tour of the Gulf this week, including visits to Bahrain, Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The delegation is led by the island's top politician, Senator Frank Walker, and includes Gerald Voisin, the President of the Economic Development Committee of Jersey's Parliament, the States of Jersey, as well as representatives of Jersey Finance, the joint public/private sector body that represents the local finance industry.

Around 40 people from Jersey's financial sector, including banks, trust companies and legal firms, will also be part of the visiting team. The visit is the third of its kind since 2002, and will provide an opportunity for the Jersey team to hold talks with senior Government officials in each location. The accompanying finance industry participants will also be seeking to promote bilateral financial relations between Jersey and the Gulf states.

The visit begins in Bahrain on March 1, continues in Abu Dhabi and concludes in Dubai. Presentations on the island's finance industry will be made to industry professionals in each location. Jersey Finance officials will also visit Doha at the invitation of the Qatari Minister for Economy and Commerce.

A self-governing dependency of the British Crown for over 800 years, Jersey has its own autonomous government, but is represented by the British Government for foreign affairs and defence. Over the last thirty years, it has emerged as one of the world's leading financial centres.

Announcing the visit, Phil Austin, Chief Executive of Jersey Finance, said "this is our third formal visit to the region since 2002 and we are extremely optimistic about the potential. Our delegation is the largest to date from Jersey to visit the Gulf, and we have many Government and commercial contacts already established from previous visits so our efforts can be focused specifically on developing business."
