Jimmy Carter hails the role of UAE's Takatof in Habitat for Humanity programme
posted on 22/11/2009

Chiang Mai - Former US President Jimmy Carter hailed the role played by the volunteers of Takatof International Volunteering Programme in supporting the Habitat for Humanity's annual Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project 2009 in the Chinag Mai in Thailand.
Takatof is a UAE voluntary social program, designed by the Emirates Foundation to create a culture of volunteering throughout the UAE. It mobilizes people and resources across the nation to help those in need.
Takatof volunteers have joined thousands of international volunteers to build or repair 166 homes in Cambodia, China, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam on the November 15-20 tour. A community on the outskirts of Chiang Mai is to be the main site for Habitat for Humanity International's global signature event, the Jimmy '&' Rosalynn Carter Project Work.
During an inspectional tour of the Chiang Mai community camp Carter expressed his happiness over the active participation of the Takatof volunteers in the international event, which offers an opportunity for redefining the meaning of volunteering, its programmes and strategies.
Meeting the members of the Takatof, Carter welcomed their contribution and said that its reflects the noble character of the UAE and its keenness to train the young generation on the new values of volunteering through setting up relations with international organisations.
The volunteers of Habitat's 2009 Carter Work Project will build homes in countries along the Mekong River, including Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and China. The build will be the beginning of a larger, multiyear effort to help 50,000 families have improved housing conditions in the five countries.
The project is aimed at helping hundreds of families into decent housing and brings attention to an area where many people live in deplorable poverty.
Habitat for Humanity began in 1998 in Udon Thani. Since July 2006, HFH Thailand has been operating through Habitat Resource Centres in Bangkok in the central area, Chiang Mai in the north, Udon Thani in the northeast, Surat Thani in the south. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
