President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan has hailed the United Arab Emirates for the support it renders to his people during the ordeals they passed through in recent years. The Afghan leader made his statement during a ceremony here on Wednesday to celebrate laying of the foundation stone for Sheikh Zayed city, which will be implemented by the UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS).

"We really appreciate these kinds f assistance. The Sheikh Zayed city project is a first step by the UAE in the housing field and we are looking forward to seeing this project extending to accommodate more of the Afghan people," said Karzai.

The head of the RCS delegation to the laying ceremony, Abdullah Al Mahmoud, said the Sheikh Zayed city in Kabul was part of humanitarian programmes carried out by the charity agency to alleviate the suffering of the people in Afghanistan, which so far cost around US$70 million.

The Kabul project will be built on a land area of 250,000 sq. metres and will contain 200 residential units, two schools for boys and girls, a mosque, health centre, hospital and public park at a cost of Dh 1 million for the first phase to be followed by other development phases to accommodate more housing quarters, according to Abdul Rahman Al Tunaiji of the RCS delegation.
