Heart surgeons from the Emirates World Heart Foundation are planning their next trip to Kenya for September and plan to operate on more than 30 patients, reported Gulf News on Monday. Doctors from all over the world, who give up their free time to carry out free open heart operations on people suffering from coronary heart disease, have already made seven trips around the GCC region.

Trips to Africa previously included Morocco. Now doctors will go to Nairobi University Hospital where one of the surgeons has joined the foundation. The Emirates World Heart Foundation is backed by the UAE Red Crescent and has more than 100 doctors, who are members, taking part in missions abroad on a rotational basis.

Adel Al Shamry, chairman of Emirates World Heart Foundation, said the trip to Kenya, which is planned for the end of September, will include a delegation of 16 doctors who will operate on between 30 to 40 patients in 10 days. He said he was very excited to have a Kenyan doctor joining the foundation.

Kenya is one of three new destinations the foundation was planning to travel to. Palestine and Pakistan have also been added to the ever-increasing list. Missions have already been carried out in Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Sudan, Syria, Bahrain and Yemen. Open heart operations costs between Dh60,000 and Dh200,000. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
