A student delegation from Khalifa University recently visited Taiwan, after being invited by the Taiwan Institute of physics, Academia Sinicam, one of the most prominent academic institutions in Asia and the world.

The eight day student trip to Taiwan offered students a unique opportunity to learn about the challenges of high volume manufacturing, and witness the most advanced equipment and automated tools deployed for high volume production, automated test and validation. Taiwan is also considered a global pioneer in the semiconductor field as more than 70% of microchips produced worldwide are manufactured at "silicon foundries" in Taiwan.

During the student visit to the Taiwan Academia Sinica, the students got the chance to experience hands on experiments relating to Nanotechnology principles, and observe the various steps involved in manufacturing silicon wafers in the foundries. The students also visited CMC Magnetics Corporation, which is a world leading corporation in storage media, and Sun Well Solar Corporation, a start up in energy harvesting solutions.

In addition to the industry tours, the students had the chance to explore and learn more about the Taiwanese culture; the students visited the second tallest building in the world, Taipei 101 skyscraper, the National Palace Museum and the National Centre for Traditional Art.

One of the students who participated in the trip, Layla Al Hosany, said "This trip helped expand my knowledge about the innovation currently coming out of Asia, as I learned various interesting facts about nanotechnology, gained fresh insight into the latest technologies in the industry and I also had the chance to work on nanotechnology principles. During this trip we were also able to learn about the Taiwanese culture and those who we interacted with learned about Emirati culture."

Each summer, Khalifa University organises international field trips, allowing students to gain a hands-on understanding of pioneering workplaces and different cultures. Previous countries visited by Khalifa University students include the USA, UK, France, Germany, Japan and Finland.
