President H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan held talks here yesterday with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, who is on a two-day visit to the UAE. As he welcomed Chancellor Schroeder, Sheikh Khalifa underlined the keenness of the UAE to bolster its strategic partnership with Germany. This strategic partnership, noted Sheikh Khalifa, would hopefully create more opportunities for bilateral cooperation in the areas of investment and joint ventures, particularly in the spheres of industry, tourism, trade, energy, environment and water, technical education and transfer of technology.

Sheikh Khalifa further underscored the importance of the agreements signed by the two countries in various economic fields, adding that these agreements would serve the best interest of the peoples of the UAE and Germany.

During their talks, the two leaders touched on the latest developments in the Middle East and the GCC, including international and regional efforts to combat terrorism. The importance of maintaining Gulf Security as the key component to stability of global oil market was also underlined by the two leaders.

On Iraq, Sheikh Khalifa said the return of power to the Iraqi people will be crucial to the stability of Iraq. He expressed his confidence in the Iraqi people, saying that the country would restore its position in the international community.

Sheikh Khalifa also called for speedy implementation of the Road Map peace plan so as to enable the Palestinian people establish their statehood as spelt out in the Road Map and the relevant UN resolutions.

"This is the only way for not only ensuring the stability and security of countries of the region but also promoting peace and economic prosperity,” said Sheikh Khalifa.

He said the latest move by the European Union was encouraging and this should also encourage the EU and the United States to support the Palestinian Authority. The EU and US should also urge Israel to withdraw from the Palestinian territories, he said.

Commenting on the UAE-German relations, Chancellor Schroeder said the agreements that have been signed between the UAE and Germany were a prove that "UAE-German relations are heading towards greater progress”.

He added: "We consider the UAE as the most important trade in the region. The UAE-German relations are indeed a model to be emulated and we hope that our relations will constitute the model for Germany's Arab relations”. The German's Chancellor said that the UAE and Germany did not only enjoy closer relations but also shared similar views on a number of issues, notably ways of combating terrorism and protecting the environment.

Germany and the EU, he said, are keen to strengthen relations with the GCC countries as part of the strategic partnership between the two sides. "The GCC region is important for Germany and the EU not only of its strategic oil reserves - which should be exploited in a way that ensures environmental security- but also because the region gaining additional political importance” Schroeder.

Schroeder also hailed the role of the GCC in combating terrorism, adding that this role was compatible with its position as a partner in achieving sustainable development in troubled hotspots in the world.

The German Chancellor described the recent developments in the region as encouraging and conducive for implementation of the Road Map.

"We support the establishment of the Palestinian state that will exist side by side with Israel. The Israeli plans to withdraw from Gaza is an important move that we welcome,” he said. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
