Khalifa apprised on federal government's strategy

President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi yesterday with H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai who gave an overview of the general strategy of the federal government.



The meeting was held in presence of General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.



During the meeting, Sheikh Mohammed outlined the national strategic objectives which "emanate from the national action plan, announced by Sheikh Khalifa during the speech he gave on December 1 to mark the national day anniversary." "The strategy comes as part of the comprehensive modernisation drive that we intend to implement across different government sectors and to make sure that it will succeed in improving performance and in enhancing human resources capabilities," Sheikh Mohammed said.



Sheikh Khalifa expressed support to the strategy and to the steps being taken by Sheikh Mohammed towards progress and prosperity of the UAE people.



The Cabinet approved the strategy during its meeting, chaired by Sheikh Mohammed. The strategy aims at reaching key goals including achieving a balanced and sustainable development, defining the federal government's priorities, improving performance in the various sectors to meet international standards, ensuring harmony in federal ministries' plans and proposing suitable policies to address urgent matters relating to different sectors and ministries.



Six ministerial teams were formed to follow up the strategy development in the different sectors as follow: Social Development team, headed by Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Justice and Safety team, headed by the Minister of Interior Remote Areas team, headed by the Minister of Public Works Economic Development team, headed by Minister of Economy Infrastructure team, headed by Minister of Public Works Government Sector team, headed by Minister of Government Sector Development.



The government's general strategy will cover selected issues within the mainstream sectors including social development which will focus healthcare, education, human resources development, demographic structure, social welfare, cultural and sports activities.



The economic development sector will focus on developing economic policies and enhancing competitive capabilities while the infrastructure sector will seek to develop federal policies relating to infrastructure, roads, water and electricity, in addition to environmental policies and preserving of water and natural resources.



The Justice sector will focus on improving the judicial system and drawing up national contingency plans whereas in government sector, the team will seek to restructure and modernise federal ministries. The remote areas team will work to boost development there.



A 24-week timeline was set for the development of the 3-phase strategy. The first phase will be devoted to defining strategic goals, the second phase will involve conducting detailed studies while the final phase will focus on devising government agenda. The teams' mandate also include revision of the strategy on yearly basis and following up its implementation. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
