Khalifa hopes Muscat Summit will enhance regional cooperation

The President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has underlined the significance of the 29th GCC summit which began at Al Bustan Palace Hotel on Monday.

In a statement on arrival here, he noted that the summit coincided with major regional and international political and economic developments that "require us to have joint visions that ensure unity of stance in addressing them.”

"We are fully confident that during this summit we will reach positive resolutions that enhance the achievements made by the cooperation march, moving forward to a new stage of Gulf joint action that serve the interest of GCC countries and meet the aspirations of their peoples,” he said.

Sheikh Khalifa said the GCC has made "tangible achievements” over the past years in different fields.

He added that he was hopeful the meeting would come out with "more effective steps to enhance the AGCC march” that would lead to the "welfare of peoples and security and prosperity of our region.”

The UAE President and the Rulers of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait were given a red carpet welcome as they arrived at the royal airport. They were received by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos of Oman.

His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain, in his statement, said the summit provided an opportunity for leaders to discuss new changes at the political and international levels.

The conference, he added, would explore how security and stability could be ensured in the region and progress achieved by the member countries protected.

He said the leaders' discussions would seek to further expand cooperation among the GCC states and review their future requirements, particularly in the economic sphere, and to safeguard them against the global financial crisis.

His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Amir of Qatar, underlined the plight of the Palestinians in his statement.

"Our summit is being held at a time when the besieged Palestinian people are being subjected to severe aggression by Israeli forces, which call upon us to take a clear stand against this aggression, so as to alleviate the sufferings of the brotherly Palestinian people.”

Meanwhile, Sheikh Khalifa met Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia, His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah, Amir of Kuwait, King Hamad and Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

At the meetings, Sheikh Khalifa exchanged views with the Gulf leaders on a number of issues which are on the agenda of the GCC summit.

The leaders also exchanged views on the latest regional and international developments and discussed the friendly relations between the UAE and other GCC countries as well as ways to further bolster them.

Present at the meetings were Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Lt. Gen. Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Obaid Humaid Al Tayer, Minister of State for Financial Affairs, Ahmed Juma Al Zaabi, Deputy Minister of Presidential Affairs, Mohammed Ali Al Osaimi, UAE Ambassador to Oman and members of the delegations accompanying the four Gulf leaders. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
