A widely read online Arabic newspaper yesterday saluted President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, saying that he helped move the UAE to a new era of empowerment.

The feature, written by Mohammed Al Awadhi and ran by Elaph online newspaper today, highlighted the role played by Sheikh Khalifa in the success of the Emirati experience of federation when he accompanied his father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and learnt from him skills leadership, politics and sense of responsibility and when he was appointed the Ruler's Representative in Al Ain in 1966, the year his father became the Ruler of Abu Dhabi.

In 1969 Sheikh Khalifa became the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Commander in Chief of the emirate's Defence Force, and in 1971, he assumed an executive position when he chaired the first local cabinet in the emirate of Abu Dhabi.

Al Wadhi pointed out that one of Sheikh Khalifa's remarkable achievements was building the armed forces in the emirate and preparing it for the 1976 consolidation with other forces of the emirates under one banner.

He also referred to Sheikh Khalifa's successful leadership of the emirate's oil sector when he developed unique oil policies.

Sheikh Khalifa was also praised for wisely managing the emirate's vast revenues and investments since 1976 when he headed the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.

"His Highness Sheikh Khalifa contributed significantly in developing the private sector in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. His most notable initiative was the creation of the Social Services and Commercial buildings Department - between known as Khalifa Committee - which administered generous loans to the citizens to build private properties and rent them to secure fixed income." This had resulted in transforming Abu Dhabi into a modern city. It is estimated that a total of AED 35 billion was spent at that time to build more than 6,000 residential towers. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
