Khalifa tours Western Region

President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan paid an inspection visit to the Western Region of Abu Dhabi yesterday. During the tour, the President listened to concerns and requirements of the citizens he met. He was accompanied by General HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

Sheikh Khalifa affirmed the government's determination to provide citizens with essential sources of decent living and also secure means that allow them earn a suitable income that caters for their needs. "The government is also keen to achieve balanced development in all emirates and deliver services at best standards to all regions in the country,” the President maintained, adding that balanced economic development allows utilisation and investment of all available resources at best practices and highest standards.

"The projects which the government is undertaking now meet the international best practices,” Sheikh Khalifa indicated, pointing out those services at the far-flung regions are integral parts of the overall development plan.

"The final goal is to turn these remote areas into attractive populated centres and incubators for productive and services projects at equal footing with high-densely populated cities,” the President added.

Sheikh Khalifa instructed the authorities concerned to answer and meet in a quick way the requirements he heard from citizens during his tour as per the designed development plans. "Government bodies should assume their responsibility as services providers interacting with the needs of citizens away from the routine and at par with the highest standards,” Sheikh Khalifa stressed.

During his tour, the President visited the Dhafra Meadows which feature 788 separate villas, 39 close-door villas and 400 apartments. The Dh940 million project is the first of a series of housing projects being executed under the comprehensive housing complex model. As part of the overall development plan for Madinat Zayed, the Dhafra Meadows is the pilot of government housing projects for citizens across the country.

Socially, the project revives the expanded family and Freej (district) concept which attracts a number of families having sets of harmonious social values, culture and traditions. The project leverages and improves the economic and living conditions of the citizens of the area by creating new investment opportunities. It features a full-fledged integrated services centre making citizens less dependent on nearby environment on their needs.

The project spans four square kilometres. Each housing unit has an area of 250 to 400 square metre.

Works related to infrastructure of the Dhafra Meadows cost Dh173 million. Construction of villas has been divided into four phases. The first phase will see the construction of 200 villas worth Dh206 million and is expected to be completed by end of June 2009.

The second phase, whose execution contract was signed 30 March 2008, envisages building of 114 villas at a total cost of Dh109 million. Under the Dh261 million third phase, 274 villas will be built for the armed forces personnel. The fourth phase of 200 villas will be financed by the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme at a total cost of Dh191 million. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
