London - His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, yesterday visited the Cabinet war rooms at Whitehall near No. 10 Downing Street. Sheikh Khalifa was welcomed upon arrival at the venue, part of London's Imperial War Museum, by the Curator, Philip Reed.

The war rooms were used by the British cabinet throughout World War II. During his tour, Sheikh Khalifa was briefed by Reed on the layout and role of the museum, which at one point was the nerve centre of the British government.

The then British Premier Sir Winston Churchill, directed military operations from the underground bomb-proof complex. The rooms offered Churchill, his Cabinet, his war council and the intelligence organisations a shelter from air raids on London. It offered a place to work, sleep and stay for as long as necessary.

The war rooms, with all their contents, were closed two days after the end of the war, and were re-opened as a museum in 1984. The museum now offers for view Churchill's office-cum-bedroom, the Cabinet Room, the map room, the transatlantic telephone room and the broadcasting room, installed by the BBC.

Escorted by British Secretary for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Jack Straw, Sheikh Khalifa and his delegation proceeded from 10 Downing Street on foot to the museum following his talks with British Prime Minister Tony Blair. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
