The three-nation tour which President H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan began yesterday underscores the dynamism of UAE's diplomacy, according Akhbar Al Saa, a daily bulletin of the Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR). President Khalifa begins a three-nation tour of Syria, Algeria and France on Sunday. Sheikh Khalifa is visiting the three countries at the invitation of Presidents Bashar Al Assad of Syria, Abdelaziz Bouteflika of Algeria and Nicolas Sarkozy of France.

Commenting on Khalifa's foreign tour which begins with Syria, Akhbar Al Saa described the visit as a significant political and economic step which should be interpreted from different perspectives.

First and foremost, the visit comes in the context of an increasing UAE role in various regional and international issues. This role, said the publication , has become all the more significant in view of the balanced and objective foreign policy pursued by the country.

"The second perspective is that the UAE has recently embarked in a flurry of diplomatic activity which saw a number of UAE officials visiting several Asian and European countries. The latest of these visits was the visit of H.H Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

"Khalifa's visit is therefore a culmination of this flurry of diplomatic activity" the publication said. It added that bilateral relations between the UAE and countries that Sheikh Khalifa is visiting are close and strong.

The UAE-Syrian ties are ever strong and UAE's investment in Syria have multiplied in recent years. Similarly, UAE relations with Algeria have seen a significant growth, particularly in the area of trade. Two-way trade rose to Dhs.1.9 billion last year.

The publication noted that both the UAE and France view their bilateral relations as strategic. Officials of the two countries have exchanged high-profile visits, the latest of which was the visit of General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

Sheikh Khalifa's visit now to France will be his second within one year, said the publication. Quoting official statistics, Akhbar Al Saa said that trade volume between UAE and France hit 3.5 billion euro in 2006. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
