Han Myeong -Sook, Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea arrived yesterday on an official two-day visit to the UAE. She was received at the Dubai International Airport by Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, Minister of Economy. The Korean Prime Minister is accompanied by a high level delegation of senior government officials.

In a statement to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, Joon Jae Lee, Korean Ambassador to the UAE said that the visit of Han Myeong-sook, the first female Prime Minister in the history of Korea, reflects the close friendly and cooperative relationship between the UAE and Korea.

"During the period of the past one year, there have been several visits by the leaders of our two countries, H.E. Prime minister Lee Hae-chan visited in November 2005, H.E. President Roh Moo-hyun visited in May 2006 and H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi visited Korea in June 2006," he said.

The ambassador added that UAE is the second largest oil exporting country to Korea. It is very important for Korea to insure a stable oil supply, because it depends wholly on imported oil for its industries. That is one of the reasons why Korea attached an importance to the relations with Gulf countries.

"Today, Korea considers the UAE as one of its most important partners, rather than an oil supplier. The UAE is the largest exporting market in the Middle East. More than 50 branch offices of Korean companies are in active operation in this country.

These Korean companies are establishing headquarters in the UAE and conducting important economic transactions, not only in the UAE but also across the rest of the Middle East. The United Arab Emirates, for Korean companies, is a central economical hub for the Middle East market.

Many Korean companies are participating in construction works of major projects of the UAE. Burj Dubai, which when completed will be the tallest building in the world, is under construction by Samsung. Hyundai is working hard to construct a power plant in Jebel Ali. Fujairah Water and Power Plant, a desalination plant constructed with the most advanced technology, was completed by Doosan. A Smart House show room has been established at the headquarters of Etisalat in Abu Dhabi in collaboration with Samsung Electronics. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
