Sheikha Latifa Al Maktoum did the UAE proud by qualifying for next year's Beijing Olympic Games in the individual show jumping event. A brilliant effort by Sheikha Latifa helped her clock 47.72 seconds in the Jump-off in the Individual Qualifier for 2008 Olympic Games on the concluding day of the Seventh Qatar International Show Jumping Championship on Sunday.
Sheikha Latifa achieved the feat while riding her own horse Kalaska De Semilly (Diamant De Semilly - Normandy Night). Sheikha Latifa had last December won a team bronze medal here at Doha in the Asian Games as part of the UAE team.
The show jumping team from Kingdom of Saudi Arabia qualified in the team event for the 2008 Games.
According to a press release from the UAE Equestrian and Racing Federation, Sheikha Latifa was under tremendous pressure and felt she wouldn't be able to make it through just before the event. "I was under tremendous pressure in the first two rounds and it is always difficult to perform under pressure. It wasn't an easy course, as we saw not many riders get through, but in the end all that matters is the qualifier for the Olympics and I have done it," said an exuberant Sheikha Latifa.
While praising the facilities and the efforts of the organising committee, Sheikha Latifa said: "The championship was organised very well, great facilities; it was a great ground to work on." Sheikh Hamad Bin Ali Al Thani, President of Qatar Equestrian Federation, felicitated the winners of the championship.
The six-day event, which began on March 6, featured over 250 riders/horses from different national, GCC and other countries. It was organised by the Qatar Equestrian Federation (QEF) in association with Federation Equestre Internationale, FEI, and Qatar National Olympic Committee, QNOC. (Gulf News)
