Washington - First Lady Laura Bush will visit the Middle East later this month to promote the fight against breast cancer and meet with women's groups, the White House said Monday.

Bush will travel to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Jordan from October 20-26 to launch new cancer awareness activities, the White House said.

"While in the region she will also visit several cancer treatment and screening centres and launch new cancer awareness activities. She will observe first-hand the US-Middle East Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research and discuss ways to expand its role," the first lady's spokeswoman, Sally McDonough, said.

In the UAE, Laura Bush will meet with Her Highness Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union and Chairperson of the National Higher Committee for Anti-Breast Cancer Campaign, her office said.

The first national campaign will be held on October 22. Titled, Break the Barrier of Silence - Diagnose it Earlier and Save Your Life, the campaign aims to create awareness for the early diagnosis of breast cancer to treat it at the early stages, WAM reported.

In Saudi Arabia the first lady will tour the King Fahad Medical City in Riyadh and in Jeddah she will meet with King Abdullah. Bush will meet with women democracy advocates and business leaders and seek to highlight education and scholarship projects, the White House said. According to Washington Post, this is her ninth solo overseas trip after President Bush's re-election. (Gulf News)
