Beirut - Lebanese dailies yesterday gave wide coverage to the completion of the first phase of the demining project in Southern Lebanon, showering praises on the UAE's nationalistic stance and significant contributions in the project. The papers pointed to the handing over of 90 fields in 12 Southern Lebanon towns, which have been successfully demined by the UAE sponsored and supervised team, which cleared an area of 900,000 square metres of a total 1,526 landmines. The papers carried the ceremony held to mark the occasion, during which the UAE Ambassador to Lebanon, Mohammed Omran, said in a key note address, that the achievement, represents just the first phase of the "UAE Solidarity Demining Project”, which started in May 2002 under the directives of President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al Nahyan. The first phase covered twelve Southern Lebanon towns, including Beit Yahoun, Bint Jubeil, Hola, Bani Hayyan, Moheibib, Rabb Thalathin, Hadatha, Barasheit, Mes el Jebel, Eit el Jebel, Teiba and Matal.
