Beirut - UAE Foreign Minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed, has said the Arab Foreign Ministers have vowed to extend support to help Lebanon face the Israeli aggression. "The Arab Foreign Ministers have strongly backed the Lebanese Government's stance," said Sheikh Abdullah who presided over an Arab League Foreign Ministers' meeting in Beirut yesterday.

Sheikh Abdullah said an Arab League delegation will fly to New York to mobilize support for Lebanon. "Arab countries do have strong connections that they can utilise to this end. What we need is tangible support, not rhetoric," he added He expressed hope that the international community would respond positively to the just demands of Lebanon.

"We truly look forward for an answer to the question raised by Lebanese Premier in Rome when he wondered if the Lebanese had less rights than other human beings. The answer we have got so far was from Israel: more devastation, killing and pain," Sheikh Abdullah said.

"I hope the international community will regain its consciousnesses and respond positively to the just demand of Lebanon.” he said. "the Lebanese deserve better. Lebanon has to be supported to overcome this ordeal. The international community has to be positive on this.” Sheikh Abdullah said Lebanon deserved a different answer than the one they have been getting daily from Israel. "

"The answer that the Lebanese are getting from Israel is more shelling, more massacres and more tragedy," he said. The meeting was addressed by Lebanon's Prime Minister Fouad Siniora who said his country simply aspired to exercise full sovereignty over its territories, just like any other country.

"No international resolution will be durable unless it recognises Lebanon's sovereignty and obligates Israel to stop its aggression and withdraw beyond the blue line and enable the Lebanese legitimate government to exercise control over all its territories," he said.

Referring to Arab support, Siniora said Lebanon needs help to reconstruct the country. "We also need strong and continuous political and diplomatic support to guard against recurrence of aggression. We want to see efforts being exerted toward issuing a Security Council resolution in favour of a permanent ceasefire and a concurrent Israeli withdrawal from all Lebanese territories," he said.
