One of the biggest opening day crowds in the history of the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby 7s witnessed a feast of full blooded rugby action as seven tournaments kicked off at the three-day carnival at the Dubai Exiles Rugby Stadium yesterday. Social and amateur teams from Europe, Africa, Australia, Asia and across the Gulf took advantage of the glorious weather to play a record 112 matches.

Among the pick of the opening day's performers were the Crawshays who claimed the scalp of reigning champions British Army 19-13 in the International Invitational before going on to whitewash the Welsh Gunners 45-0 and wallop Susie's Salon 38-14.

Le Froggies also caught the eye with convincing victories over the Skyrunners, whom they beat 38-7 and Evolution VBs at 21-10. But while the amateurs and enthusiasts battled it out for the chance of making the latter stages of the competition today and tomorrow, the crack 7s professionals representing the 16 international teams made their final preparations for the start of the Emirates International Trophy.
