Lockheed to deliver F-16s in 2004

The US will start delivering F-16 jet fighters to the UAE in 2004 and the acquisition will largely bolster the UAE Air Force, manufacturers of the aircraft said at Idex2001. Dave Wright, Lockheed Martin spokesman, said deliveries could take several years as the two sides have just signed the contract. "Deliveries will begin in 2004 and it will be the best F-16 ever produced by Lockheed...it will be even better than those in service in the US army because this one involves new technology," he said. He added that such jets will bolster the UAE air force and at the same time boost the partnership. He said the $6.8-billion package, which involves the purchase of 80 F-16s, includes delivery, training, construction of air bases and other related facilities, spare parts and maintenance. The deal was snatched by Lockheed after strong competition from other international companies, and is governed by the UAE Offset programmes. (The Gulf Today)
