Lubna Al Qasimi meets US Trade Representative and prominent Congressmen

Washington D.C. - Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, the Minister of Foreign Trade has held a series of meetings with US Trade Representative and a number of US Congressmen within the framework of her current visit to the Washington and highlighted the commercial and investment ties between UAE and USA in general, and with some states in particular.

Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, the Minister of Foreign Trade, held talks with the United States Trade Representative Ron Kirk at his office in Washington on UAE-US commercial ties and means to boost and enable them to further develop the trade partnership that exists between both friendly countries.

During the meeting, She indicated that commercial ties between both countries are continuously improving, pointing out to the fact that non-oil trade between the UAE and USA increased by 76% during the past 4 years, going up from around US$7 billion in 2006 to US$12.2 billion in 2010, adding that this constant progress in commercial ties confirms the numerous and diverse opportunities offered by the economies of both countries, and the dynamic nature of commercial and investment opportunities available in the UAE market.

Sheikha Lubna also highlighted the available investment opportunities between both countries, especially in the field of advanced technological industries. She also spoke about the UAE's economic foundations and the continuous measures undertaken by the state to ensure that the national economy is more competitive regionally.

She pointed out that the UAE enjoys an advanced infrastructure and dynamic investment climate in addition to its unique geographic location which has made it a connecting point between east and west.

They also discussed global economic affairs and the measures being taken by both sides to face the repercussions of the global financial crisis. They also discussed the latest regarding the Doha Development Agenda which is within the framework of the World Trade Organization.

Lubna Al Qasimi also touched on the state's position regarding various trade talks and on how to support positions of joint interest.

For his part, the US Trade Representative underlined the importance of boosting commercial ties between the UAE and the USA, pointing out to the need to become more familiarized with the latest legal frameworks and trade legislations of the Gulf Cooperation Council states.

He also touched upon his country's position regarding the various issues and cases being discussed within the framework of the Doha Development Agenda.

Meanwhile Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi also held a series of meetings with a number of US Congressmen and highlighted the commercial and investment ties that exist between the UAE and the USA in general, and between the UAE and some states in particular.

She also met with South Carolina Congressman James Clyburn and pointed out that the UAE is considered the 13th most important global trade partner for South Carolina adding that there has been a considerable increase in the state's exports to the UAE from US$21 million in 1999 to US$432 million in 2008.

She emphasized the importance of intensifying the presence of US companies in the trade fairs and events that take place in the UAE.

For his part, Congressman Clyburn welcomed Sheikha Lubna's visit and expressed his admiration of the economic development and growth witnessed in the United Arab Emirates.

The Senator added that South Carolina has succeeded in attracting a number of large companies, one of which was Boeing.

Lubna Al Qasimi also held talks with Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander regarding the commercial ties that exist between the UAE and the State of Tennessee and the means by which to further boost and develop them.

She affirmed the UAE's keenness to strengthen its commercial cooperation with the United States of America and the State of Tennessee, pointing out to the importance of having the state's companies benefit from the diverse investment opportunities that are available in the UAE markets.

For his part, Senator Alexander expressed his interest in the UAE's peaceful nuclear energy program and the strategy the country is following in this regard. He also expressed his admiration of the state's economic and foreign trade achievements and the great strides the UAE has taken with regards to female empowerment.

Minister of Foreign Trade also met with Minnesota Congressman Keith Ellison, the first Muslim ever elected to the US congress and discussed the investment and trade opportunities that are available in the UAE, especially those available to small and medium enterprises, pointing out to the dynamic commercial and investment activities and trade fairs that the state hosts annually, which cover food, health, technology products and many more.

For his part, Ellison expressed his desire to visit the UAE in the near future with a business delegation comprised of the heads and CEOs of small and medium enterprises, commending the UAE"s own efforts in developing small and medium enterprises.

Yousef Al Otiebah, the UAE Ambassador in Washington, Juma Al Kait, the Executive Director of Foreign Trade Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Trade, and So'oud Al Nuwies, the Commercial Attach ' of the UAE Embassy in Washington were also present during these meetings. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
