Ras Jedir - UAE Minister of Foreign Trade Sheikha Lubna Bint Khalid Al Qasimi and Tunisian National Defence Minister Abdelkarim Zbidi paid yesterday an inspection tour of the Emirates Relief Camp and the UAE field hospital in Ras Jedir at the Tunisian-Libyan borders as part of her visit to Tunisia.

Sheikha Lubna and Zbidi were welcomed at the camp by Abdul Rahman Ibrahim bin Abdul Aziz, head of the UAE relief team, who explained to them the overall situation in the camp, one of two relief centres set up by the UAE to receive displaced Libyans as well as refugees from sisterly and friendly countries and provide them with shelter, food, health and educational services.

During the tour, Sheikha Lubna met with a group of families and enquired about their living conditions and requirements. The two ministers also inspected the 30-bed, fully equipped field hospital which along with the Tunisian hospital are delivering healthcare services to the patients and wounded.

In a statement following her tour, Sheikh Lubna lauded the relief, humanitarian and health services provided by the UAE aid workers and paramedics.

'The UAE relief team symbolises the UAE noble humanitarian initiative to assist brothers in Libya and give hand to other brothers and friends,' she said.

For his part, Tunisian National Defence Minister Abdelkarim Zbidi paid tribute to the UAE under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan for delivering humanitarian assistance to the displaced persons and refugees. He also lauded relentless efforts made by the UAE relief team in the service of people affected by events in Libya.

The Ras Jedir and Dhahabiya camps deliver their humanitarian care to about 24,000 people. The UAE aid agencies delivered almost 50 tonnes of food items to nearly 4000 Tunisian and Libyan families and repatriated 75 families to their homelands. The UAE has so far delivered 74 tonnes of essential food materials and 349 tonnes of food and supplementary items.

A school was opened at the camp to provide education to children and a clinic has so far screened and cured some 16,000 patients. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
