Lulu Island off the Abu Dhabi coast is officially opened for the public, the Department for Municipalities and Agriculture announced in the capital yesterday.

Saif Al Qubaisi, Assistant Under Secretary for Roads and Technical Services, said: "'The move is an embodiment of the leadership's directives to turn Abu Dhabi into a major global tourism destination offering high quality diverse resort and recreational facilities.”

The objective of the 10-km island development is to create a special world of experiences, combining entertainment with the cultural, recreational and leisure elements.

Amenities include marinas, gardens, canals, botanical gardens and children water parks, an equestrian riding centre and a variety of resort accommodation.

Al Qubaisi said ferries would take visitors from a marina near the Heritage Village to Lulu Island. Visitors to the island can also take a train, which tours the whole island, giving them an amazing experience of a journey through desert, artificial lakes and magnificent mountains.
