His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, opened yesterday the 14th FIFA Under 20 World Cup at Zayed Sports City. The three-week tournament is being held under the patronage of President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The opening ceremony featured a magnificent musical extravaganza.

The UAE has spent more than Dh 180 million to upgrade seating, lighting and playing and media facilities at the six host stadiums. Organisers said hosting world's youth soccer's pinnacle event will help the UAE to strengthen its capability to become a leading host of major international events, following its successful staging of the September WB-IMF meetings. The last World Youth Championship, held in Argentina in 2001, saw 149 goals scored at an average of almost three a game. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
