In the course of its ongoing Asian tour, The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) visited Malaysia, where Dato Seri Tanko Adnan Mansour, Malaysian Minister of Tourism received SCTDA Chairman, Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, and H.E. Mohamed A. Al Noman, SCTDA Director General, in his office in Kuala Lumpur. The purpose of the meeting was to find ways to enhance relationships and the exchange of experience between Sharjah and Malaysia, in order to improve both countries' economic, particularly tourism, sectors.

The meeting, which was attended by a number of top Malaysian officials, explored ways to increase cooperation between the two countries' tourism sectors and the number of tourists and investors. Sheikh Sultan highlighted the factors which they have in common, such as the interest in preserving culture and heritage as well as their attractive business climates, which encourage investment in many areas, especially in tourism, now considered to be one of major sectors that are supporting the GDP in both countries.

Dato Seri Tanko praised the tourism products and well known attractions of the Emirate, especially in regard to heritage and modern culture, which, thanks to the vision and care of H.H. Sheikh Doctor Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, have ensured that the Emirate of Sharjah is today one of the prime tourism destinations in the region.

The Minister also discussed Malaysia's complete tourism strategy, including cooperation between both the private and public sectors, which Malaysia has adopted in order to increase the number of visitors to more than 20 million tourists this year.

On the part of Sharjah, Sheikh Sultan discussed the progress that the emirate has been witnessing since 2000 in its tourism sector, which has been marked by an increase in hotel occupancy rates to 100% by the end of 2006. This confirms the success of the SCTDA's strategy, which was adopted to develop this sector under the explicit instructions of Sheikh Doctor Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah and has made the Emirate of Sharjah the capital of Arab culture and an ideal tourist destination, both regionally and internationally.

The visit of Sheikh Sultan received great interest from Malaysian officials and media, and comes at a time when Malaysia is currently celebrating the 50th anniversary of its independence. The country holds about 240 festivals throughout the year, which showcase the variety and depth of Malaysian culture and heritage. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
