Beirut - Medical aid accounts for much of the assistance provided by the UAE as part of the reconstruction programme in Lebanon, an official overseeing the project has said. The UAE project which began in 2006, is part of a continuing UAE effort to assist Lebanon. The project was launched on the orders of President H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, following the Israeli onslaught on Lebanon in 2006. It encompasses various socio-economic aspects.

"During the outbreak of the war, the UAE was the first to rush aid to its Lebanese brethren. Food and medical supplies were rushed by sea and later by air. Wounded victims were sent to the UAE hospitals for medical treatment, and when the war ended, the UAE embarked on a massive reconstruction project", explained Mohammed Khalifa Al Rumaithi, Director of the project.

He said medical assistance accounted for the bulk of the UAE aid. The focus on medical assistance was aimed at boosting the capacity of the health sector to deal with the medical challenges posed by the war. Apart of medicines, UAE charity agencies donated a total of 33 ambulance vehicles and seven more are being prepared for donation. "This project is integrated and is helping considerably to ameliorate the socio-economic conditions of the Lebanese as well as Palestinians in the refuges camps in Lebanon" , said Al Rumaithi.
