Abu Dhabi, May 26, 2010 (WAM)- German Chancellor Angela Merkel lauded great role played by Masdar to create practical and scientific solutions to reduce dependence on the traditional energy through resorting to the alternative and renewable energies. She noted that the German companies were ready to cooperate and strike partnership with Masdar.

The remarks were made during her visit yesterday to the headquarters of the Abu Dhabi Company for Future Energy (Masdar), accompanied by the delegation. They were briefed on the practical steps to construct six-kilometre Masdar city, which is set to be the first carbon emissions free city in the world.

Merkel was received on the arrival by Dr Sultan Ahmed Jaber, Chief Executive, Masdar, and number of experts and employees at Masdar. Dr Sultan accompanied Merkel in her tour at the Masdar Sciences and Technology Institute, the first Masdar scientific and research project. It will be inaugurated in September to receive students and researchers.

Dr Jaber stressed the depth of relations between Masdar initiative and Germany, referring to the fruitful and constructive cooperation between Abu Dhabi and Germany in the renewable and alternative energy sciences.

He noted that the Masdar initiative was looking forward to innovating new solutions that depend on the alternative and renewable energy in all aspects of life, adding that the move aims to reduce dependence on the fossil energy and other energies that pollute environment in an attempt to reduce the global warming and tackle the climatic changes caused by the carbon emissions.

For her part, Helen Pelosse, director general of the International Renewable Energy Authority (Irena), welcomed Merkel's visit to Masdar, stressing the role played by the UAE and Abu Dhabi to support Irena. She also emphasised the support of Masdar to Irena, which is expected to set up permanent headquarters at Masdar. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
