Ministry of Environment and Water calls on falconers to comply with CITES

The Ministry of Environment and Water has called on falconers, exhibitors and participants at the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX) to adhere to the rules and laws included in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) to ensure free movement of falcons.

The move comes within the framework of efforts to protect the wildlife and falcons from extinction.

The Ministry said in a statement issued that the distribution of brochures and booklets to visitors would enlighten them about procedures to implement the CITES in the UAE. It added that the falconers should access the CITES certificates from the Ministry for importation or exportation or re-exportation of falcons.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), also known as the Washington Convention, is a multilateral treaty to protect endangered plants and animals. It was drafted as a result of a resolution adopted in 1963 at a meeting of members of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). – Emirates News Agency, WAM
