MoFA to raise nationals' awareness about Schengen visa waiver

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) of the UAE has launched a campaign to raise the awareness of Emiratis about travel arrangements to the Schengen area, ahead of the official announcement of the exemption later this month.

The thirty four member countries of the Schengen agreement which will exempt the nationals of the UAE from the requirement to obtain an entry visa in advance are: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Malta, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania, Liechtenstein, Cyprus, Norway, Portugal, Spain, The Vatican, Andorra, San Marino and Monaco.

The Ministry will launch the campaign in the official local media and through its official accounts on social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram to provide the necessary advice and guidance to Emiratis travelling to the Schengen area to help them avoid difficulties that may arise during their travel.

The campaign is part of the keen interest of the Ministry in providing service to UAE nationals and to further emphasise its role in facilitating their travel and to spare them from any difficulties they may face while abroad.

The awareness campaign will seek to provide all of the information that Emiratis need to know before they travel to a Schengen country. This includes the duration of stay in Schengen counties, whereby, in every six months of one year, visitors may stay in a Schengen country for a maximum of 90 days, continuously or for an accumulated period. They may not stay for a period exceeding a continuous 90 days in a Schengen country, and, if they want to enter the country again, they have to spend 90 days outside it.

The Ministry urged Emiratis travelling to Schengen countries to read the travel advisory available from the travel advice page on its website.

During the awareness campaign, MoFA will directly communicate with members of the public through its Twitter and Instagram accounts, @MoFAUAE, to answer their questions. It will also tweet important advice and guidance about travelling to Schengen countries.

MoFA also urged Emiratis that, after the official announcement of the Schengen visa exemption later this month, they should cooperate with the official authorities upon arrival in the destination countries and to declare required important personal information such as duration of stay, intended place of stay, air ticket, date of departure and any funds they may carry during their stay.

The Ministry also urged citizens to register for the Ministry's Tawajedi services (My Whereabouts) on www.mofa.gov.ae , which is primarily dedicated to communicating with them during emergency situations or crises they may face while abroad, and to use MoFa's smart app, UAEMOFA. The website also contains the contact numbers of the UAE's mission in the country of destination.

It noted that Emiratis can always seek help by contacting it on 00971600599991 in the event of any emergency in countries where the UAE does not have diplomatic representation.

In February last year, the European Parliament voted to allow visa-free travel for UAE citizens to Europe. - Emirates News Agency, WAM –http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395280019970.html
