In implementation of the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to those affected by drought in the Horn of Africa, the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Humanitarian and Charity Establishment has started its relief operations in the refugee camps in the Somali- Ethiopian borders.

The Establishment also gave food aid to the victims of famine responding to an appeal issued by the United Nations to provide food and shelter to hundreds of thousands of Africans threatened by the worst drought in half a century.

This was stated by the Adviser to Dubai Ruler for Humanitarian and Cultural Affairs, Councillor Ibrahim Bumelha at a press conference, which was attended by officials from Dar AlBir Society of Dubai and Dubai Islamic Humanitarian Institution.

"Over 900 tons of various essential food items have been gathered in Ethiopia in preparation to their distribution among the impoverished people suffering from malnutrition brought about by the famine in the HOA", said Bu Melha.

These include rice, wheat, flour, edible oil, sugar and milk and other important food items, he added. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
