The launch of a high-powered council to promote competitiveness in the government and private sectors has been approved by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The Emirates Competitiveness Council (ECC) will develop the UAE's competitiveness strategy and propose policies and initiatives. "The new council seeks to achieve the UAE's vision to become one of the world's most competitive countries while integrating UAE nationals into the development process," said ECC Chairman Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi, the Minister of Cabinet Affairs.

"The ECC's strategic goals are in line with the UAE Government's strategy, which aims to achieve sustainable and balanced development of the country and provide the best standard of living for all UAE nationals and residents and raise the performance levels of all sectors."

Minister of Economy Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansouri has been appointed Vice-Chairman and the members includes representatives from the federal government, local governments and the private sector.

The foreign trade, education, labour and health ministers plus the ministers of state for foreign affairs and financial affairs are all members, so are the secretary-generals of the Executive Councils of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman and the general managers of the Ruler's Courts of Umm Al Qaiwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. The Competitiveness Council will have its own secretariat which will operate within the Prime Minister's Office. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
