General H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, hosted yesterday evening a dinner banquet at the Emirates Palace in honour of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his accompanying delegation.

The banquet was attended by a number of Sheikhs, ministers and top officials as well as members of the delegation accompanying the British Prime Minister.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown arrived in Abu Dhabi yesterday on a two-day state visit to the UAE. The UAE trip, his first since he became British Prime Minister in July 2007, is the final leg of his tour of Gulf States, which also included Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

On his first day of visit, Brown visited the Abu Dhabi Men's College of the Higher Colleges of Technology HCT. He was welcomed upon arrival at the campus by Dr Tayeb Kamali, Vice Chancellor of the HCT, and top members of the teaching and administrative body.

The British prime minister was briefed by Dr. Kamali on academic activities and programmes of the HCT and their mission for qualifying graduates to join local labour market.

Gordon Brown also visited ADIPEC 2008 (Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition '&' Conference). He addressed ADIPEC's Executive Plenary Session on "Working together to deliver sustainable growth: innovative teams and technology deployment".

The Prime Minister said, "This (ADIPEC) conference comes at a defining moment for the global economy. The decisions we take over the coming weeks and months will shape our world for a generation." He added, "I'm delighted that Shell and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) have today signed a memorandum of understanding to evaluate potential joint exploration, development and production of offshore deep gas field prospects in Abu Dhabi. And today we will sign a memorandum of understanding with the Abu Dhabi future energy company Masdar, to work in partnership to develop and deploy low carbon technologies."

The Prime Minister concluded saying, "Let us maintain the political courage to continue and deepen the dialogue we have begun here in the gulf to stabilize global oil markets and together build the foundations for a low carbon recovery. And let us make this a time of visionary internationalism, together building the global solutions on which the sustainability of our global economy depends." – Emirates News Agency, WAM
