Mohammed is Deputy Supreme Commander

President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has issued three federal decrees. The first decree appoints Lieutenant General Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince, as Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.



According to the decree, the Deputy Supreme Commander will be a member of the Supreme Defence Council, supervise implementation of its decisions in respect of the Armed Forces armament and organisation. He will also exercise responsibilities assigned to the Deputy Supreme Commander stated in decision No 1 for 1976 of the Supreme Defence Council.



The second decree promotes Major General Sheikh Hazza Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chief of State Security, to the rank of Lieutenant General, while the third appoints Major General Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior, to the rank of Lieutenant General.



On November 30, 2003, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed was appointed as the Deputy Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi by a Presidential decree, which authorised him to assume the position of Crown Prince once the position falls vacant. He was appointed Abu Dhabi Crown Prince in November last year.



Born in 1961, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed has been the UAE Armed Forces Chief of Staff since January 1993 and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General on January 24, 1994.



Sheikh Mohammed completed his regular schooling in the UAE, and graduated from Sandhurst Military Academy in 1979. He took a number of specialised military courses and held several military ranks including Commander of Air Forces and Air Defence and Deputy Chief of Staff before being was appointed as the Chief of Staff.



Besides his military duties, Sheikh Mohammed is also the President's Chief Advisor on National Security Affairs. He also participates in all political and legislative discussions and is an active member of the Supreme Petroleum Council, the highest petroleum and energy authority in the UAE. Sheikh Mohammed was decorated with a number of medals from the UAE, Bahrain, Pakistan, the US, France and Italy. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
