'Shukran Dubai' (Thank You Dubai), a monument shaped like a 9.35 metre model of a dhow, was unveiled on Saturday under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, and UAE Minister of Finance and Industry to mark the glorious maritime achievements of UAE.

The event at the Burj Al Arab Hotel. which was attended by top government officials, distinguished personalities and representatives of private establishments who were involved in the project began with a recitation of verses from the Holy Quran followed by the UAE's national anthem.

A minute's silence was observed at the august gathering as a mark of respect to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Marwan Al Ajami, Operation Manger of Development Information, Wessam Al Mona, General Director of Mfray Middle East and Salim Shediaq, General Director of Red Bull Middle East, spoke on the occasion and a special video on Dubai's development was also presented as part of the programme, according to Khaleej Times.

Referring to the late President he said, 'Fortunate are the people whose leader lifts them to the pinnacle of economic prosperity, yet never makes them lose sight of their natural heritage.' Paying a personal tribute to the departed leader, Al Ajami said the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was one of the few leaders in the world who has shown true compassion to people, apart from his great achievements.

His principles were based on justice, humanity and brotherhood. The envious growth of the nation for the last 30 years are all fruits of his commitment towards the country and his foresight to bring all necessary potential for the development of the nation. It was his conviction that the desert can be turned green, he added. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
