Abu Dhabi, Dec. 23, 2001 (WAM) Another planeload of relief supplies will leave here for Kabul as part of an airbridge programme by the UAE Red Crescent Society, RCS, to deliver relief assistance to the Afghan refugees and displaced persons. The supplies, which include a large quantity of winter clothing, blankets, food and medical items, is being accompanied by Mohammed Rashid of the RCS' emergency and supplies section. According to Sanaa Al Kutbi, RCS Director General, the airbridge programme, which will cover major Afghan cities, including Kabul, Kandahar, Mazar-e-Sharif and Jalalabad, is in line with the directives of President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed forces, and under the supervision of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, who is also the RCS Chairman. She said that the RCS will exert every effort to give the necessary support to the people of Afghanistan, who have suffered enough from wars and other human and natural disasters, which have effected negatively every aspect of life and every category of the Afghan people, especially, women and children.

Meanwhile, another RCS delegation, headed by Mohammed Eid Al Qubaisi, has left here for Islamabad to oversee a smooth dispatch of an RCS convoy of 15 truckloads of various kinds of relief supplies from the Pakistani capital to the Afghan town of Jalalabad. The delegation will personally supervise the distribution of the 400 tonnes of relief items to the beneficiaries in Jalalabad and will also inspect the situation of the people there to have a first hand information about their needs. They will also visit the RCS refugee camp in the border town of Chaman to distribute to the refugees' relief assistance and familiarise themselves with the situation of the refugees in the camp. WAM
