The directorate of immigration and naturalisation of the ministry of interior issued new orders to curb the transfer of visit visas to employment permits. The department announced that it would cancel any new work permit if its beneficiary were proven to be inside the country on a visit visa.

Sponsors of such permits will be sued for supplying false information to the authorities, said Brigadier Hadhir Khalef Al Muhairy, Director General of the Immigration and Naturalisation section. The move was in line with the Council of Ministers Decree No. 17 of 1993, banning the change of visit permits to employment. Doctors, engineers, teachers, accountants and categories specified by the council of ministers' decree will be not be affected. They can still change their visit visas if they are hired.

The ministry has already issued instructions to its various department install accurate computer systems that will show visitors overstaying the visit or tourist visas. If their names appear in the computer as visit, tourist or transit visa holders, then their employment visas will be cancelled even if the labour ministry had agreed to such an issuance. The immigration authorities will notify the sponsors of the violation.

The authorities will also make it mandatory for sponsors to advertise any cases of their absconding visitors in the local press. The sponsors will have to bear full legal responsibility of the consequences resulting from their actions of their visitors, Al Muhairy explained. Apart from taking sponsors to court, the ministry would not deal with any sponsors or companies who engage in helping the visitors to obtain employment permits without leaving the country.

The ministry will work with the labour department to investigate cases where companies apply for work permits while the beneficiaries are in the country. The labour ministry will seek a proof whether the sponsor was aware of the presence of the visitors when they applied for the visa. In case of the violation being established, the immigration authorities will ban the company for a year and sponsor taken to court. (The Gulf Today)
