The UAE yesterday voiced its deep concern over the abject humanitarian circumstances in many countries of the Islamic World and donated one million dollars to the Islamic Solidarity Fund in support of its effort to ease suffering of the affected people. 'The Islamic World is passing through a very delicate political crossroad due to the recent events in the region in the light of developments in Iraq, Palestine, bilateral divisions, and proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, terrorism, poverty and disease which have, in turn, negative impacts on stability and economic development in our Islamic World,' UAE Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Awqaf Mohammed bin Nakhira Al Dhahiri said in an address to the 31st meeting of the foreign ministers of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in Istanbul.

'The Islamic World is in desperate need of extensive fence-mending campaign and settlement of bilateral rows through peaceful means so as to pool energies for addressing daunting challenges,' Dhahiri told the gathering. The UAE, he reiterated, believes that dialogue is the best mechanism to settle disputes among nations. 'The UAE confirms here of its full sovereignty over its three Islands of Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Musa and their territorial waters as part and parcel of its territory,' Dhahiri stressed. 'The UAE hopes contacts with Iran will end the occupation of these islands, giving the UAE back its full rights to them, He said, noting that settlement of the issue would contribute to regional security and stability and open up new avenues of cooperation.

Speaking about humanitarian situation in the Islamic World, the minister said the UAE viewed with deep anxiety the suffering of populations in many Islamic countries. 'The UAE out of its concern for fellow Muslims donated one million dollars to the Islamic Solidarity Fund to help it do its humanitarian responsibility properly,' the minister said, noting that UAE relief agencies were making great efforts in this respect. On Iraq, he said the UAE welcomed the UN Security Council resolution no 1546 on Iraq as an important step towards the hand over of sovereignty to Iraqis. 'The UAE welcomes the UN Security Council resolution on Iraq and appeals to all sectors of Iraqi people to seize this historic opportunity to close the past page of divisions, violence and join their hands in one coherent front to get Iraq out of its current situation in order to restore security and stability,' he added.

The UAE called on the US, the Quartet and the EU to pile pressure on Israel to commit itself to the roadmap for peace and stop its policies of assassination, siege, repression, demolition of homes and properties. The UAE also regretted the US decision to slap economic sanctions on Syria and hailed Damascus positive stance towards settling outstanding issues through diplomacy and dialogue. On terrorism, the minister said the 'UAE condemns terrorism in its all manifestations and forms. The UAE, he said, denounced the recent terrorist acts in Saudi Arabia and backed measures Riyadh takes to uproot the menace. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
