Brussels - The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (Nato) Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, received yesterday in his office UAE Foreign Minister HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is currently visiting Kingdom of Belgium.

They discussed during the meeting cooperation between Nato and the UAE in the framework of Istanbul Cooperation Initiative (ICI) and Isaf.

Sheikh Abdullah reiterated keenness of the UAE to promote cooperation with Nato in different fields to boost regional security, peace and exchange technical, defence and training expertise, and to benefit from the experience of Nato in training and information swap.

For his part, Rasmussen thanked the UAE leadership for hosting the Nato Conference in Abu Dhabi last October. He commended the role of the UAE in Afghanistan in regard to humanitarian aid and its role in peace keeping in Balkan. "The UAE is very important for Nato in the ICI as it contributes tremendously to peace keeping with Nato in Balkan and also plays significant role with ISAF Nato forces in Afghanistan.

He added that the Abu Dhabi meeting, which was attended by the UAE Foreign minister "gives us a chance to develop and boost our cooperation ties with our partners in the ICI, which include UAE, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait." The Nato Secretary General noted that in the light of success of the Nato meeting in Abu Dhabi "we are looking forward to holding meetings at the level of ambassadors of the ICI member countries and the Mediterranean Dialogue Countries soon to expand cooperation and prepare for similar talks between the Foreign ministers of these countries with Nato at the later stage".

He noted that Nato is keen about the ICI member countries in general and the UAE in particular, reiterating that "we are looking forward to promoting these important ties between the UAE and Nato".

Earlier the UAE and Nato signed the Security Agreement with Nato on the intelligence information swap in presence of the UAE Foreign minister and the Nato Secretary General, at the sideline of the Nato conference held in Abu Dhabi from Oct. 28- 30. The UAE is the second country in the ICI to sign such an agreement with Nato. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
