The National Consultative Council yesterday discussed a wide range of problems, including health, education, housing utility services, in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi. The issues were discussed after reviewing a report on the problems of the Western Region during yesterday's meeting chaired by Speaker Abdullah Mohammad Al Massood.

The house was informed several meetings were held with various government organisations and authorities to help solve these problems. Members unanimously approved the recommendations and urged further discussion for their earliest implementation. According to the report, housing is the pressing issue in many remote areas and suburbs of Al Ain city. The report said many UAE nationals are living in houses which are more than 30 years old.

The meeting was also told some UAE nationals live in shanties and prefabricated houses in some areas, therefore there is an urgent need to speed up allocation of houses. Members were also told that basic amenities, such as health facilities, education and parks, were missing in some areas.

The council called for the establishment of various community cooperative associations in the Western Region to coordinate efforts to solve these multiple problems and discuss these issues with higher authorities.

The committee suggested the construction of three new hospitals for the residents of Mazzyad, Al Dhaher, Umm Ghafa, Al Hair, Nahel, Suweihan, Al Yahar and Al Salamat. Construction of new schools and renovation of old ones in some of these areas was also suggested by the council. The council also suggested setting up of an emergency unit for handling traffic accident casualties on Al Ain-Dubai Highway.

Members of the National Consultative Council during its session yesterday tabled a motion seeking discussion on further developing rehabilitation services and supporting senior citizens and people with special needs. Members called for improving services rendered to these members of society. They stressed the rehabilitation of people with special needs so they could take part in the development of the country and its economy. "They deserve every support we could offer. They are an important part of our society," adds motion. (Gulf News)
