The National Consultative Council (NCC) has called for declaration of an all-out war against terrorism and depriving any person who pledges allegiance to foreign (extremist) groups the right of citizenship and the honour of belonging to the UAE. The council proclaimed that it regarded links to such groups as high treason against the country. The calls were spelled out at the second meeting of the 16th legislative chapter of the NCC, which was held here yesterday.

The agenda of the meeting, which was presided over by Abdullah bin Mohammed Al Masoud, Speaker of the council, included review of a report of the previous session, the report on the reply to the inaugural speech as well as the questions and general issues. In its reply to the opening speech, the council praised the achievements of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and the sincere efforts of the President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in cementing the basic rules and the infrastructure to achieve the economic development.

The council expressed support to the strategic decisions, which were issued last year with aim of achieving a quantum leap in all fields of the national work, the restructuring of government machinery, the development efforts, especially in the field of education, which was embodied by the President's decree on the setting up of Abu Dhabi Education Council to bridge the gap between the outcome of education and the requirements of the labour market.

It also hailed the decision on the establishment of the Emirates Corporation, which was designed to create the partnership between the public and private sectors. The council also lauded the government subsidy to small and medium size projects, which serve as the cornerstone for bolstering the role of private sector in raising the productivity and increase its participation in the development process with the aim of diversifying the sources of national income.

The nine-member committee tasked with replying to the opening speech was formed with Mubarak bin Abdullah Al Muhairi as its Chairman. It approved the setting up of 10 ad-hoc committees. These are the preparatory, internal and defence affairs, financial and industrial as well as industry, trade and petroleum, legislations and legal, education and information, municipalities and public amenities, health affairs, work and social affairs, Western region affairs and Eastern region affairs.
