Under the directives of H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister and Chairman of National Media Council (NMC), the Council marked the Flag Day yesterday at its head office.

Earlier, Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, called for observing the Flag Day on 3rd November, which coincides with the anniversary of the accession of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to the U.A.E.'s presidency.

The event was attended by all employees and Dr. Arif al-Sheikh, who wrote the lyrics of the national anthem.

Marking the national occasion, the NMC employees expressed their joy at the Flag Day and the accession of Sheikh Khalifa to the U.A.E. presidency. The event was marked a month ahead of the National Day Anniversary.

Dr. al-Sheikh told the Emirates News Agency (WAM) in a statement, "The national celebrations have a special place not only in the hearts of Emiratis, but also among expatriates who share Emiratis' joy on this great day. This attitude reflects love for the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the U.A.E.." He added that the 3rd of November each year boosts a sense of belonging and love for the country, especially when the Vice President ordered the hoisting of the Flag on this day at all the government institutions and premises of the private sector corporations. Earlier, Sheikh Abdullah launched in 2011 the campaign titled: "Flag above our home" to mark the national day anniversary.

Recalling the time when he wrote the national anthem's lyrics, Dr. al-Sheikh said he wrote the lyrics in 1986, adding that it took him three days to complete writing the lyrics. From 1971- 1986, the U.A.E. had no national anthem though the constitution stipulated it. He noted that the idea of the national anthem as a piece of music was implemented in late 1971 and early 1972 by Egyptian musician Saad Abdul Wahab, who also composed music for the national anthems of many Arab countries.

Dr. al-Sheikh said he was inspired by Ahmed Humaid Al Tayer, the then acting Minister of Education. - Emirates News Agency, WAM –
