Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research HE Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan and Director of International Cooperation Unit at the European Commission Robert Burmanjer discussed yesterday cooperation between UAE and the European Commission in scientific research.

Burmanjer, accompanied by Dr. Tareq Mazyani from the Directorate of the research, is currently on a UAE tour, during which they will visit various universities and research centres in the country.

The European Commission official proposed more participation of the UAE research initiatives in the 7th Framework Programme (FP7). Sheikh Nahyan welcomed this idea of joining hands with the European Commission in the vital field of research.

FP was launched by the European Commission early in 2006, with its broad objectives being grouped into four categories: Cooperation, Ideas, People and Capacities.

Co-operation: The Cooperation programme will support research cooperation between universities, industry, research centres and public authorities throughout the EU and beyond. The programme is sub-divided into ten themes based around broad disciplinary groups. While each theme will be operating their own programme there will be opportunity to allow for activities cutting across different themes.

Burmanjer told Emirates News Agency (WAM) that there are several research projects in the pipeline, especially in the fields of water technology and energy, and the European Commission is ready to learn similar researches underway in the Gulf region. The official expressed his hope that cooperation in this area may be achieved by next November. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
