Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Education, yesterday inaugurated the Gulf Defence Conference, which is being held at Abu Dhabi International Exhibition Centre on the eve of the seventh edition of the International Defence Exhibition and conferences, IDEX 2005.

IDEX 2005 kicks off on Sunday and closes on Feb. 17. Sheikh Nahyan, who opened the event on behalf of General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, said regional and global conditions and challenges should be thoroughly studied with a spirit of credibility, transparency and frankness.

"We in the Gulf region are quite convinced that the extremely intricate regional and global conditions and challenges in the security and defence fields as well as repercussions of accelerated developments in the region, should always be the focus of thorough study in such a manner that is characterized by credibility, transparency and frankness," he said in a keynote address to the forum.

He expressed the hope that the conference would lead to more deep and comprehensive understanding of issues and problems encountering national defence officials and that it would serve as a platform for a fruitful dialogue and exchange of views on global crises and related policies of countries.

"As you may notice, this conference is being held amid extremely intricate regional and international conditions. Regional alliances are on perpetual growth, global blocs are being formed and changing so fast and challenges in security and defence domains are prevailing and on the rise as the Gulf region is drawing special attention of the world," he said.

He added: "We, in the Gulf region, are well aware that the approach we embrace in addressing those issues will decidedly determine the feature of the present and the image of the future. Those issues, as you know, are multi-faceted. We can mention as examples the war in Iraq, global terrorism, navigation security in the Gulf, unconventional WMD proliferation, modern warfare systems, advanced weaponry technologies, regional defence system and status of oil in the region as well as other political, social and economic consequences that run in parallel with fast track developments in the region.

Sheikh Nahyan lauded the role played by the UAE Armed Forces and General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
