Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, has underlined the need for nurturing the values of cooperation and friendship among individuals and nations and renouncing cultural degradation.

"It is high time that we pressed for coexistence among people of different cultural backgrounds", he told members of Cambridge and Oxford Alumnae Society who visited him at his palace this evening. Sheikh Nahyan, who is the President of the Society, said peace, tolerance and respect of cultural differences must prevail.

"The Arab World and the west should live together in peace because they are neighbours. It is the duty of us all to bring them together", he said.

He praised the two universities as playing a noble humanitarian role in creating favourable conditions for bringing different cultures and civilizations together. "For this matter, both Universities have been very active, through their specialist centres.

Noting that education is the first step toward cultural rapprochement, the Minister called for enhancing the quality of education in both worlds to help bridge the knowledge gap.

Sheikh Nahyan strongly rejected the notion of civilisational conflict, calling instead for more understanding and cooperation. Miss Nancy Kenny, of Oxford University, said the University had been very active for many decades in fostering good relations with the Arab World. She cited the establishment of dedicated research centres as an example of Oxford's commitment to this cause. The Cambridge and Oxford Alumnae Society was established 15 years ago and has around 100 members of different nationalities. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
