The sky over Abu Dhabi's Corniche was lit up with spectacular display of colourful fireworks last night, and spectators crowded the Corniche Street and the Breakwater to witness the event which began at 10.30pm. The fireworks display was organised by Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry as part of the National Day celebrations to pay tribute to President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan for his guidance and wise leadership in developing the country.

The fireworks were held at the creek between Lulu Island and the Corniche in front of the Chamber Tower on a floating barge. The Corniche Street was also packed with a caravan of vehicles, displaying portraits of Sheikh Zayed, other leaders of the country and UAE flags and banners. The decorated vehicles started crowding the street just after 10pm and continued marching around the Corniche and the Breakwater till early hours of today.

A strong posse of Traffic Police patrols remained at the Corniche throughout the festive time to assist and control the traffic. The traffic patrols were also assisted by Civil Defence rescue teams and paramedic teams. Residents thronged heritage villages and exhibitions organised by various establishments to observe the National Day. Hundreds of people also visited the heritage villages and exhibitions organised by Abu Dhabi Police General Directorate at the Police Officers Club.

The directorate launched a ten-day programme at the club on November 24 to celebrate the occasion. It was inaugurated by Major General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Undersecretary of the Interior Ministry. The programme also included competitions and quizzes for schoolchildren and adults, featuring the history of the UAE federation and the three decades of infrastructure and social development attained.

A similar festival, which combines Ramadan, Eid and National Day celebrations, is on at Abu Dhabi International Exhibition Centre grounds. The festival, which also raises fund for the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) projects, was opened on the eve of Ramadan by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and RCA Chairman Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

National Day Cup horse races were held on Sunday night at Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club Race Course to mark the 31st National Day celebrations. The races, witnessed by a large number of spectators, continued till the early hours of yesterday. Elsewhere in the capital, several functions and events were held. Welfare organisations and associations of different expatriate communities also took part in the celebrations by organising special programmes at their premises to mark the day. Expatriate communities also hosted meetings and gatherings to discuss the achievements attained by the UAE under the leadership of Sheikh Zayed, as well as special lectures and speeches.
