National Day report 2004 - The water runs from one spring

This is the first National Day of our beloved country which we will witness without Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founder and architect of this country, among us. Indeed, all of the UAE grieves his passing away on November 2. However, Sheikh Zayed's fragrant memory, like that of all other great founding fathers, will endure forever thanks to his great contribution to this country.

While all future national days will always bring back the memory of this visionary and inspirational leader, this National Day can only be one of great sadness, and one when we deeply mourn the death of Sheikh Zayed.

No doubt, our eyes shed tears today while we recall the creation of a unique union in 1971. One can see Sheikh Zayed's imprint in every corner of this country for more than 30 years, be it in a meeting with his countrymen in his majlis, or in official meetings with presidents and leaders of other countries abroad. This means Sheikh Zayed's image and that of the UAE are one.

Whenever Sheikh Zayed is mentioned, the UAE springs to mind too, and whenever the country is recalled, so will Sheikh Zayed. The UAE and Sheikh Zayed will remain forever linked. Great leaders such as Sheikh Zayed remain alive in their countries and in the hearts of their citizens because of the great achievements and sacrifices they have made.

Such leaders are remembered whenever their countries are mentioned because the destiny of the person becomes one with the destiny of that nation. Who fails to link Gandhi with India, or Nelson Mandela with South Africa, or Charles de Gaulle with France? Sheikh Zayed will remain in the heart of this nation as a historic leader and those who take responsibility for this country after him can only continue his vision of progress and development.

President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Their Highnesses the Rulers of the Emirates, are entrusted with maintaining the nation's unity and ensuring the glory of its citizens. With their undisputed loyalty to their nation and allegiance to their founder, Sheikh Zayed, they are the natural successors of an unparalleled leader.

This National Day is an occasion for pursuing national work relentlessly under the new leadership, which has been brought up and has received able guidance in Sheikh Zayed's school. We are assured the future will be as prosperous as our present because the water runs from one spring. (The Gulf News UAE National Day Supplement)
