Nations giving priority to sustainable transportation

Countries around the world are now giving top priority to achieving sustainability in transportation. The negative impact of the existing systems with regards to safety, congestion, pollution, equity and efficiency have prompted countries to act, according to a research paper presented at the Environment 2005 conference here yesterday.

"Sustainability requires that a transportation system integrate all the various modes into a seamless system that moves people and goods efficiently in a way that is environmentally sound, socially just, safe and secure, and ethically based," the paper said.

The research paper on Sustainable Transportation: The Educational Dimension was presented by Prof Joseph S Szyliowicz from Graduate School of International Studies, University of Denver. He said any effort to achieve sustainable transportation requires leaders and decision makers who understand the issues and the kinds of policies that must be implemented.

There is an urgent need for the development of in-country educational and training programmes to support sustainable transportation. This area, he said, requires much greater attention and commitment than it has received to date. (The Gulf News)
